Disabling DNS - Domain Name Server

Windows 95/98 .
Windows NT 4.0.

The Name Servers are dynamically assigned at login. If you are currently specifying them, it is recommended that you disable them and use server assigned addresses. We currently have verified this configuration works with Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 and will post updates as other configurations are tested.

Windows 95/98

Follow these steps to disable any specified Name Servers.

Click on the button and move the mouse pointer to Settings. Now move the mouse pointer over to Control Panel and click the left mouse button once. This will open up the Control Panel.

Locate the icon that says Network and double click on it, or press the Enter (Return) key on your keyboard if Network is high-lighted. This will open up the network control panel.

In the Network control panel, on the configuration tab, click on TCP/IP or TCP/IP Dialup Adapter and click on properties using the left mouse button for both clicks. This will bring up the properties window for TCP/IP. With the left mouse button, click on the DNS Configuration tab. Click once with the left mouse button on the circle next to Disable DNS. It should look similar to this.

With the left mouse button, click the button for TCP/IP Properties and then click the button for Network. After your computer makes the necessary changes, you will see the following message dialog window.

With the left mouse button, click the button and let the computer restart.

Now follow these steps to allow our Servers to assign the Name Server addresses for your computer.

With the left mouse button, click on the button and move the mouse pointer to Programs. Now move the mouse pointer over to Accessories, then move the mouse pointer over to Dial-Up Networking. Again, with the left mouse button, click once on Dial-Up Networking. This should bring up a window similar to this one.

Please note, in this example, the connection to our services is titled THE NET. On your computer, it may be CIA, THE-CIA, the-cia.net or another name. This can be verified in the control panel under Internet and connection.

With the left mouse button, click once on the connection for our service. Then again, with the left mouse button, click on File and move the mouse pointer to Properties. With the left mouse button, click once on Properties. A window similar to this should appear on your desktop.

With the left mouse button, click once on the Server Type button to get this window.

With the left mouse button, click once on TCP/IP Settings... and make sure that your settings match these exactly.

With the left mouse button, click three times and then click the X at the top of the Dial-Up Networking window.

You are now setup to allow our servers to dynamically assign you your Name Servers.
